     道观河原叫倒灌河，为新洲境内三大河流之一沙河的一条支流。清光绪《黄冈县志》记载：“道观河，源自大崎山，西南流为高家河，折而北为倒灌河，即道观河（此地有紫霞寺道观因名）。”民间传说对道观河名称变换则赋予了传奇色彩。很久很久的时候，道观河东向西流，悖于西向东去的一般江河流向，为倒流，当地人称这条河为倒灌河。相传东晋年间，有一著名道士，看中此地山水，便在此筑观炼丹修身，后得道成仙飘然而去，人们便把倒灌河改为道观河，并延续至今。
     道观河有街，原为古韩城驿，是一座古老的集镇，历史悠久，相传兴建于战国。韩国大臣韩公使楚，曾在此逗留于驿站，邀请知名人士了解民情，关心百姓疾苦，深受爱戴。为纪念这位大人，道观河人将他下榻的驿站更名为“古韩城驿”，并用汉白玉石雕四个大字嵌在门额上。
     物换星移，人世沧桑，时代变迁。新中国成立后，道观河面貌逐步发生变化。1958年，成立道观人民公社。“大跃进”期间，开始筹建道观河水库。几经周折，到1965年9月才正式动工，受“文革”影响，1968年春，坝高75.2米，坝面长345米的道观河水库正式灌水。这座水库承水面积108.84平方公里，库容达1.096亿立方米。这座集灌溉、养殖、发电于一体的水库为道观河人民带来了福音。水库修成后，道观人民公社改为道观河水库管理处，辖区范围达21.9平方公里，先后兴办了养殖厂、罐头厂、瓦楞厂、水电站等10余个中小型企业，职工近400人。
     八十年代初期，道观河经济不发达，农民年人均纯收入仅300元，企业职工900元。
     1989年11月，一代高僧释本焕大和尚回故里新修祖庙报恩寺，选中道观山水福地。于是，兴修庙宇拉开了开发道观河山水旅游资源的序幕。
     本焕法师时年81岁，故乡新洲。60多年前出家修行，曾接法于我国近代高僧，世寿120岁的虚云大和尚，成为中国佛教禅宗临济宗第44代传人。德高望重佛法精深的本焕法师，其弟子达十数万之众，遍及海内外。他的出家之寺原为报恩寺，地在新洲仓埠，后因故毁坏。他的众多高徒建议他兴修祖庙，本焕法师听从徒议，派人到道观考察山水，择地修寺。
     当时的新洲县政府给予老法师大力支持，修通一条长达4公里的山道。1994年10月，经五年建设，本焕大和尚捐资1500万元，重新修建的报恩禅寺落成开光。
     报恩禅寺占地134亩，建筑面积1.8万平方米。建成的天王殿、卧佛殿、大雄宝殿、法堂、藏经楼、方丈室、宝塔、钟鼓楼、听涛阁依山重重叠叠，而天王殿、大雄宝殿、法堂同处一轴线，临水背山，错落有致，落差十数米，梯次而而上，令人感到庄严肃穆。最为惊奇的是，卧佛殿内，另为楚天第一汉白玉释迦牟尼卧佛像，重达9吨，长约6米，为整块玉石雕成。卧佛面善目慈，形神逼真。

     1994年道观风景旅游区对外开放之后，近10年来，风景区又有了新的发展，面貌发生了新的变化，一个贫穷落后的偏远山区已成为每年接待旅游人数20多万人次的新兴风景旅游区，成为湖北省旅游定点单位。
     1997年，香港时式宝石公司，看中道观佛地，投资2000余万元新建世界宝玉石博览馆，建筑面积8000多平方米。博览馆建于湖心岛，雕梁画栋，楼台亭榭，飞檐斗角，琉璃溢彩。馆内珍藏世界各地宝石、玉石、晶石、玛瑙、珍珠、亿万年化石及各种矿石材料几百种，总价值近5000万元。用宝石、玉石等原料雕制成的几千件不同类型的工艺品摆放馆里供游人观赏。博览馆共分十馆，四条长廊及三座亭台，视听馆放映宝石产地、挖矿、制作过程的电视录像，名人馆陈列古今中外名人雕像，以及三国、水浒、红楼等数百座人物雕像，雕像栩栩如生，观者留连忘返。
